How much does it cost to join Swinton SKC?

There is no membership fee to join our club.

We do request that before any person joins in a training session that they complete an application form, so we have important information such as name, address and contact details, plus some questions regarding the applicants general health - it is important that instructors are aware of any physical problems that a student may have e.g asthma, or diabetes etc...

We allow new members to come and train for 4 weeks free of charge to see if they enjoy the training.

After the 4 week trial period new members agree subs on a monthly basis by standing order; £15/month for Juniors and £20/month for Adults.

For this fixed monthly fee students can train as often as they choose, the more training sessions a student attends the better value for money it is for them - see training times and locations for venues.

The benefit of this scheme is that all courses prior to gradings are free to club members, and as a bonus, all students paying by standing order have their licences renewed by the club

each April; provided they have paid monthly membership for a full year.

Non-members can pay to train on an add-hoc basis, current charges per lesson are:
Juniors £5.00/lesson, Adults £6.00/lesson.

Do I need a licence?

YES, visitors are very welcome to come along and watch us train for as long as they wish, but anyone who wants to join and grade, must apply for an annual licence.

How much does a licence cost?

An annual licence costs £20.00, they are renewable at the start of April each year.
Licences monies are paid directly to the Chief Instructor, in return every student receives a licence book, to record grading examinations, and an annual licence certificate which provides mandatory 3rd party insurance cover for persons training in martial arts.

How often are grading examinations held?

Grading examinations are held locally every 3 months.
Kyu grade examinations (coloured belt gradings) cost £15.00

All Gradings are carried out by two panels of senior instructors, the first panel assesses the students abilities in Khion (basics) and the second panel will assess the students kata (form) and Kumite (Sparring).

Choosing a Martial Arts Club;

When looking for a suitable Martial Arts Club there are several things to consider.
Don't be blinded by glossy advertising campaigns, and feel free to visit several clubs as a spectator before making your mind up.
A well run club should be able to show the following credentials.

1 - Instructors License
The instructor’s license will show the individuals training history and should give an indication of the depth of knowledge in the chosen discipline.
To achieve 5th DAN from 1st DAN takes around 15 years, so be wary of instructors claiming to be 4th or 5th DAN but can only show that they have been training for 4 or 5 years.

2 - Grading Certificate
The instructor should be able to produce a 'valid’ grading certificate from a recognised governing body which will confirm that he is entitled to the grade he is claiming.

3 - Enhanced CRB
An Enhanced CRB (criminal records bureau) disclosure will show the suitability of the instructor to teach children.
Each instructor within the club should hold a CRB and is a requirement by most Sports Centres.

4 - First Aid Certificate
Injuries can happen during a training session and so instructors should hold a valid St John's first aid certificate, and is also a requirement by most Sports Centres.

5 - Insurance Certificate
All clubs must have adequate insurance to cover all its students. This should be an original document, and not a letter-headed declaration.

* Please note it is not possible to get insurance to cover children under 5 years of age.
In addition to the above, a well run club should also have a clearly written Child Protection Policy.
